On Saturday August 10 we are holding our annual club picnic at the Point Street Tavern in Saltsburg, PA. Concurrently, the same picnic lunch is the lunch stop on the 2024 Rough Diamond Century, starting in Millvale earlier in the day.

For the picnic rides, we suggests selecting one of these 30 mile routes, that are a segment of a Pittsburgh Randonneurs 300 km route.

If you have a gravel bike and want a bit of an adventure, we highly recommend is “Saltsburg – Blairsville – and back – Adventure Version”

This route leaves Saltsburg on the West Penn Trail. It hits a short section of trail that is somewhat single trail like, you climb a gravelly climb at the Conemaugh dam, descend some steps, and then ride a causeway across the Conemaugh River, and ride a pretty isolated section of the West Penn Trail to Blairsville. Pretty cool.

The road version of the same route goes the same general direction, avoiding the most gravelly bits But still a pleasant country ride, with just a bit of adventure. On dry days President Jim has ridden both routes on his road bikes with 28mm tires.

Note that if want to ride the Rough Diamond Century (RDC), it is starting at Millvale Riverfront Park. Dave Lusher is riding the RDC, leaving at 7:00 AM. Details HERE.

All riders attending lunch should plan to arrive back at the Point Street Tavern between 11 AM and noon. The preliminary lunch menu is:

  • Pulled chicken sandwiches.  These would be serve yourself style with the meat and buns separated.
  • Mediterranean hummus wraps with assorted vegetables.  These would be prepared in advance, some with cheese and some without cheese (vegan) at whatever count we request.
  • Pasta salad with no meat
  • Soft pretzels with 3 beer cheese and mustard dip options
  • Tortilla chips with guacamole, sour cream, and salsa dipping options
  • One adult beverage or soft drink per person included.  Additional beverages available for purchase.

Where to park in Saltsburg per the West Penn Trail website: “There is ample parking at the Saltsburg Playground, as well as easy access to the trail from street parking throughout Saltsburg. Take a ride on the Saltsburg or Kiski Sections from here, and enjoy access to our sister trail, The Westmoreland Heritage Trail.”
