It’s Been a Hot and Stormy Summer – Especially Tuesdays

The Cecil rides in particular were in thunderstorm ally all of June, and Kris Moser has also been careful with high heat index days.  Thanks Kris Moser!  The new Team Decaf ride leader committee has been working out well.  Last week they posted and led A,B, and C rides and groups.  Pittsburgh Randonneurs have been keeping up their monthly ride schedule.  Thanks RBA Dan!

A New Club Website is in the Works

The “paint by numbers”  WordPress President Jim implemented 5 years ago in two weeks became very creaky this summer.  While RBA and past webmaster Dan Blumenfeld said “never again” to working on the website, he has indeed stepped up to replace the website, focusing on a new membership management module better suited to our needs.   Chris Main and Pauline Connelly are in the wings to take over support once Dan gets the basics going.  Once we have the new website up, we will be reminding active riders to join the club.  The dues go mostly to our annual ride insurance costs that protect both the ride leaders and riders with liability insurance, as well as modest gap medical insurance for riders as well.

Rough Diamond Century on Saturday on Saturday August 9th

We are  pleased to report Jeremiah Sullivan and the Unison bike club stepped up this year to lead the 2025 Rough Diamond Century.

WPaBC organized and led the RDC for perhaps the last decade. This spring RDC founder Dave Lusher and occasional organizer Jim Logan reported on the RDC Facebook page that neither of us were going to lead it this year. Jeremiah Sullivan stepped up and and convinced his riding club – Unison – to go along for the ride.

Note that while this route has the VISION of a trail route, missing gaps in the trail cause both some significant climbs and some high traffic situations. Still, the RDC is the only time of the year that many of us ever ride along the Kiskiminetas River.

2026 Board and Officer Nomination Open Soon – President Jim Says It’s Time for a New President

After 20 years of a combination of being ride leader, event organizer, RBA, Ride of Science Coordinator and various offices, President Jim reports it is time for him to step back from active involvement in the club.  The combination of his 2024 accident (2nd lifetime concussion!), his 2025 (lack of) aerobic performance, his involvement over the years in Rides of Silence and Ghost bikes, make it time for him to step back from being accountable for others on the road and working to just enjoy cycling again.  The club board has a short board meeting via Zoom on Sunday August to discuss the nominating process for 2026.
